Hello again everyone, welcome to my latest blog post - where I have a review of the pre-season friendlies that were played during Wednesday and Thursday.
Many teams across Europe were in action yesterday, as they prepared for the start of the season in respective matches.
Liverpool 0 Roma 1:
The Reds recorded a 1-0 defeat against Italian side Roma, thanks to a late own goal from Danish defender Daniel Agger with just minutes to play in the match.
Amid reports that QPR striker Loic Remy was flying into America to complete his medical at Liverpool; the side lost their first competitive friendly of July with 3 or 4 first-team players getting some minutes under their belt.
The likes of new signings Rickie Lambert and Emre Can both played, and Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel captained the side during the game on a late night in the UK.
Roma celebrate their goal, a flick-off Borriello bounced into the net from Agger, to give them the win |
In the first-half, injury struck for Italian striker Fabio Borini, who has been heavily linked with a £15million pound move to Sunderland. He was substituted after 10 minutes, after a shoulder injury forced him to stop playing.
Injury-prone: Borini was unable to continue after injuring his shoulder in the first-half |
LA Galaxy 0 Manchester United 7:
Louis van Gaal started his managerial career as United boss in style, as his side conjured up an emphatic 7-0 victory over MLS side LA Galaxy, comprehensively thrashing them.
Goals from Ashley Young (2), Wayne Rooney (2), youngster Reece James (2) and Danny Welbeck gave The Red Devils a perfect start to their pre-season campaign in America.
Jumping for joy: Welbeck celebrates his effort, to put United ahead after 13 minutes |
Clinical: Ashley Young scored a brace on the night, as United were rampant from start to finish |
New wonderkid on the block: Reece James (pictured next to Rafael) celebrated, he scored 2! |
From the spot: Rooney got his name on the scoresheet with 2 goals, one from a penalty |
They play against Roma on Saturday, and van Gaal's tactical approach will be intriguing to see again in that encounter.
Perhaps the most encouraging sight of all is not only that the team were able to adapt to van Gaal's new tactics, or that they gelled together perfectly - but that new signing Ander Herrera shined throughout the match on his debut appearance.
2 assists on his debut, and he looked comfortable and composed on the ball - very promising prospect in midfield, alongside Mata.
Herrera poses with Fletcher post-match, he was awarded the MOTM for his performance. |
