Brazil WC 2014, USA vs Germany + Portugal vs Ghana - Match Reports:

Hello again everyone and welcome to my latest blog post - where I have two match reports from the final group stage fixtures in Group G as USA played against Germany, while Portugal were up against Ghana.

Below was the situation in Group G before the matches were played:

  • Germany were top of the group with 4 points, with USA on 3 (in 2nd) and Ghana and Portugal occupying the bottom two places
  • Germany virtually already sealed their place in the knock-out rounds, while the USA only needed a draw to be certain of a place in the Last 16
  • Portugal needed to beat Ghana by more than 4 goals (as their goal difference was negative) and hope that USA lose, in order to progress
  • Ghana needed to beat Portugal and hope that the USA did NOT match their result - to get into the Last 16
Here are the team line-ups and news, ahead of both matches in Group F earlier on:

USA vs Germany -

USA: Howard, Johnson, Gonzalez, Besley, Beasley, Beckerman, Jones, Zuzi, Bradley, Davis and Dempsey.

Subs: Guzan, Yedlin, Diskerud, Brooks, Altidore, Bedoya, Johannsson, Wondolowski, Green, Cameron, Chandler and Rimando.

Germany: Neuer, Boateng, Mertesacker, Hummels, Howedes, Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Kroos, Ozil, Muller and Podolski.

Subs: Zieler, Weidenfeller, Grosskreutz, Ginter, Khedira, Schurrle, Klose, Draxler, Durm, Gotze, Mustafi and Kramer.

Portugal vs Ghana -

Portugal: Beto, Pereira, Pepe, Alves, Veloso, Moutinho, Carvalho, Amorim, Nani, Eder and Ronaldo.

Subs: Eduardo, Vieirinha, Costa, Neto, Silva, Meireles and Varela.

Ghana: Dauda, Afful, Boye, Mensah, Asamoah, Atsu, Rabiu, Agyemang-Badu, Andre Ayew, Waris and Gyan.

Subs: Adams, Inkoom, Opare, Essien, Acquah, Jordan Ayew, Adomah, Sumaila, Wakaso and Kwarasey.

Match Report - USA vs Germany:

PRE-MATCH: It was always going to be a tense affair between the two sides, not least because 5 of the USA's players in this World Cup were eligible to play their trade for Germany.

The likes of Bundesliga duo Jermaine Jones and young winger Julian Green could have both represented Germany, but were persuaded to play for America - by manager and German boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

Both teams would secure their place in the Last 16 with a draw in the match, and despite the pre-match analysis from both sets of countries in the media, it would be an intriguing encounter between two sides of completely different situations.

The USA were expected to be the "whipping boys" of the "Group of Death" - while Germany were not expected to take their foot off the pedal as they were hoping to go on and win the whole tournament itself.

Suarez in the headlines yet again... BANNED FOR 4 MONTHS, REACTION:

When will he learn? Not once, not twice but THREE times that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has decided to angrily BITE a player, which is just beyond comprehension.

He has had all the professional help that one could ask for, and despite his clear talent as a footballer, he cannot control his anger on the pitch.

Just a couple of days ago, everyone was praising him for how he handled his country's match against England - playing with an injured knee and still happening to score 2 goals against the Three Lions and leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Suarez has gone from zero to hero, and then back to zero after his unjustifiable actions
Stealing the show: Suarez shook off a knee injury to score a brace against England last week
But now, he'll be in the headlines again as the man who couldn't learn from his mistakes and this could arguably end his spell in England, based on how the next couple of months go.

As a football fan, you will obviously be disappointed as the beautiful game that we all know and love is being tarnished by a silly, reckless act. IF you didn't know, there was a match yesterday - Italy join the likes of Spain, England and Cameroon out of the World Cup.

But the headlines and media attention will all be on Suarez yet again. And already people are suggesting he should be banned for life. Just wow.

LATEST:
It has been confirmed that Suarez has been given a 4-month ban from all "footballing activity" - as well as a 9 match ban from club football for Liverpool.

And now the pressure will be on his club to perform again without their star man, despite his key influence on their performances over the last few seasons.

The league's top scorer last season, and will be sorely missed in the early stages of the season
Suarez's involvement helped the club to a top 4 finish for Liverpool, the first time since 2008-09
Lambert, Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho among others will be under increasing pressure to play well without their talisman, especially as they have UEFA Champions League football to look forward to, and he will miss the first three games.

Here are the Premier League matches that Suarez will miss -

Such a shame, for a player this good to be missing football for so long, due to a stupid action. What makes it worse is the fact that he has done it before, seeked professional help and is still BITING.

Not a good advert for the sport, the headlines are all around Suarez again, for the un-desirable reasons.

Brazil WC 2014, Nigeria vs Argentina - LIVE COMMENTARY:

Hello again everyone and welcome to my latest blog post - where I have a live commentary from the final group stage fixtures in Group F as Nigeria play against Argentina and Iran are up against the already knocked out Bosnia.

Here is the current situation in Group F:
  • Argentina have already qualified for the Last 16, after 2 back-to-back wins over Bosnia and Iran before this match
  • Bosnia are the first team in Group F to have been knocked out of the competition, with 0 points to their name before today's match
  • Iran have a chance of joining Argentina in the Last 16, but this will only happen if they beat Bosnia and Nigeria do not better their result - they currently have 1 point and Nigeria have 4.

Here are the team line-ups and news ahead of both matches in Group F today:

Nigeria vs Argentina -

Nigeria: Enyeama, Ambrose, Yobo, Omeruo, Oshaniwa, Onazi, Mikel, Babatunde, Odemwingie, Musa and Emenike.

Subs: Ejide, Uzoenyi, Gabriel, Egwuekwe, Odunlami, Oboabona, Azeez, Nwofor, Uchebo, Agbim and Ameobi.

Argentina: Romero, Zabaleta, Federico Fernandez, Garay, Rojo, Gago, Mascherano, di Maria, Higuain, Aguero and Messi.

Subs: Orion, Campagnaro, Biglia, Perez, Rodriguez, Augusto Fernandez, Demichelis, Palacio, Alvarez, Basanta, Andujar and Lavezzi.

Meanwhile in the other Group F match, between Bosnia and Iran -

Bosnia: Begovic, Vrsajevic, Sunjic, Spahic, Kolasinac, Hadzic, Pjanic, Besic, Susic, Ibisevic and Dzeko.

Subs: Fejzic, Avdukic, Bicakcic, Vranjes, Misimovic, Mujdza, Lulic, Ibricic, Medunjanin, Visca, Hajrovic and Salihovic.

Iran: Haghighi, Hosseini, Sadeqi, Montazeri, Pooladi, Teymourian, Nekounam, Dejagah, Shojaei, Hajsafi and Ghoochannejhad.

Subs: Ahmadi, Heydari, Reza, Jahanbakhsh, Ansarifard, Haddadifar, Mahini, Alenemeh, Rahmani, Beikzadeh, Beitsahour and Davari.

17:00 - Both matches have kicked off in Group F, and I will be concentrating on the Nigeria vs Argentina match. Goal updates LIVE from Bosnia vs Iran aswell as the game continues.

3: GOAL! That was quick... Barcelona striker Lionel Messi breaks the deadlock for his third goal in three matches with a rebounded effort from close range which he couldn't miss, after a lofted through ball over the Nigerian defence ended in a shot from di Maria hit the post!

3 in 3: Messi celebrates his rebounded effort to give Argentina the lead early on
4: GOAL! Another one! 1-1, and Nigeria with a quick response! A wonder strike from Ahmed Musa who curls a super effort past Romero into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the area.

Game on: Musa celebrates his goal with his team-mates to make it 1-1 straight afterwards
10: First 10 minutes played, and it's already 1-1... Who would have thought it? Nigeria are currently progressing through to the Last 16, along with the already qualified Argentina.

11: Iran vs Bosnia is still 0-0, and Iran need to win and hope that Argentina also do if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the knock-out rounds.

13: Nigeria are defending well, doing their best to ensure that Argentina have limited space and time on the ball when they are in their half - they know the damage that could be done.

16: First corner of the match for Argentina, whipped into the box by Messi but no Argentina players are quick enough to react and goalkeeper Enyeama jumps highest to comfortably catch the ball.

19: Great free-kick delivery by Messi into the area - danger is averted thanks to a diving header towards Enyeama's path.

22: Free-kick given to Nigeria after Gago tussles aggressively with Oshaniwa and leaves the defender in a heap on the ground.

23: GOAL UPDATE -
Good news for Nigeria, not so much for Iran though. Bosnia are 1-0 up, thanks to a strike from Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko.

Bosnia are already out of the competition after back-to-back defeats, but they could have an effect on who goes through.

26: An ambitious long-range effort from Stoke City striker Peter Odemwingie, from 25 yards out - but his shot flies over Romero's goal and Argentina have a goal-kick.

29: CHANCE! Di Maria with a fizzing power strike from 25 yards out, Enyeama does well to dive to his left and parry the shot away and out for a corner.

31: Enyeama goes down under an accidentally elbow into the stomach from Higuain, as he jumps high with his arms above his body to try and catch a corner delivery.

33: Higuain protests his innocence, the referee delays the match momentarily as Enyeama gets up to his feet and no card is shown for the Napoli striker.

35: Argentina have dominated the match in terms of possession, and passes completed - especially in the final third. Making Nigeria work for the ball, which forces them to make mistakes
with their backs to goal.

36: Oh dear. It seems as though there is an injury problem for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who has had an injury-plagued season in England and is clutching his leg on the ground away from the action. The referee stops play, so that Aguero can receive treatment from the physios.

37: Argentina SUB -
Sergio Aguero OFF
Ezequiel Lavezzi ON

38: A real shame for Aguero, who limps off the pitch looking disappointed - perhaps a muscular injury for the City player.

40: Argentina are continuing to keep up the pressure on Nigeria now, the question is whether Nigeria will be able to hold out for the rest of the match.

42: Clumsy tackle by Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, who clatters into the side of Lavezzi near the edge of the area.

43: A free-kick in a dangerous position for Messi, who stands over it and waits for the referee's whistle.

44: CHANCE! Messi's free-kick is well struck, over the wall and was goal-bound - but a good diving save from Enyeama near the top corner of the net ensures that the score is still 1-1.

45: Another free-kick for Argentina, this time from slightly closer range for Messi to take. 2 minutes of stoppage time to be added on, can the magic man conjure up another goal on the stroke of half-time?

45+1: GOAL! Yes he can! Lionel Messi makes it 2-1 before half-time, with a sensational free-kick into the top corner with Enyeama desperately scrambling to his left. What a goal, his 4th of the competition!

Magic man does it again: Messi with a curling free-kick over the wall, into the net!
Messi celebrates his 4th goal of the tournament, level with Neymar in the race for World Cup top scorer
45+2: Nigeria are going to have to come from behind again in this match, 2-1 down at half-time.

18:04 - Second-half has begun, no substitutions as Nigeria kick off.

46: GOAL! And Nigeria equalise again, thanks to Ahmed Musa yet again! Great 1-2 pass between him and Emenike on the edge of the area, before he beat both defenders to slot past Romero from close range!

47: What a game this is turning out to be.

48: Omeruo with a late sliding challenge on Lavezzi near the edge of the area, and the referee brandishes a yellow card for the defender, despite him protesting that Lavezzi made the most of the tackle.

49: Enyeama is called into action again, an excellent strike by Di Maria is parried over the bar.

50: GOAL! Argentina make it 3-2! A headed effort from defender Marcus Rojo, and the Argentinians are back in-front again.

51: Poor defensive man-marking by Nigeria, they just ball-watch as Rojo pounces on the corner delivery to head past a static Enyeama, who probably should have done better with that.

52: Second yellow card of the match goes to Nigerian defender Oshaniwa after clattering through Lavezzi's legs and leaving the PSG winger on the floor in a heap.

53: FACT - Nigeria have become the first African nation to score more than once against Argentina in a World Cup.

54: Great dribbling run by Messi, who beats two Nigerian defenders with pace before threading through a neat pass across towards Higuain, who latches onto the through ball but his resulting shot is blocked by the oncoming run by Enyeama, who comes out quickly to block Higuain's shot.

55: Would have been a great assist by Messi there, the weight on the pass and the movement by him into the area was simply perfect.

56: Nigeria need to tighten up their defence and hope that they are clinical again on the counter attack if they want to get a result out of this match, it seems as though they are just relying on Musa!

57: Not had many clear-cut chances apart from the two goals, and find themselves 3-2 down against a rampant Argentinian side.

The crowd in Porto Alegre today has helped the atmosphere, both sets of supporters are singing loud and proud - especially Argentina, who are convinced that this is their year.

58: Now it's time for Iran to respond. They are currently 1-0 down to Bosnia, and as it stands they are going to be knocked out - unless they can win today and Argentina keep up their scoreline at the minute.

60: GOAL UPDATE - Bosnia 2 Iran 0. Okay forget I said anything, Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic has doubled the Bosnians' lead with a low strike past a sloppy Iranian defence.

61: Argentina SUB -
Lionel Messi OFF
Ricky Alvarez ON

62: Messi jogs off the pitch to a warm round of applause around the ground, having scored twice and stealing the show once more. He is not injured, but will be rested for the knock-out rounds.

63: Injury concern for Nigeria, as midfielder Michael Babatunde is on the ground clutching his arm. The physio have rushed onto the field and he is currently being treated.

64: Babatunde will not continue, replays show that a powerful shot by his team-mate Onazi hit his arm, and he has been down ever since.

65: Nigeria SUB -
Michael Babatunde (injury) OFF
Michael Uchebo ON

66: Nigeria replace Babatunde with Uchebo, who is a tall and strong looking player who could be vital for set-pieces and tracking back for his team. 3-2 still.

73: CHANCE! Nigeria almost equalise again, and it's Musa again! Great defensive work by Onazi to win the ball back - passes the ball across to Odemwingie who swings a cross into the area.

Musa shapes to shoot, and Manchester City full-back Pablo Zabaleta instinctively runs into his path to block the attempted shot.

74: Zabaleta is clattered afterwards, but not before he puts Musa off taking the shot as the Nigerian's effort is well wide over the bar.

76: Good defensive work by Argentina as Nigeria attempt to score again, but clear the danger away.

77: CHANCE! A well-worked free-kick routine on the edge of the area between Di Maria and Lavezzi sees the latter have a shot parried by Enyeama, out for a corner.

78: Superb sliding tackle by Zabaleta to race back towards his own goal and block the attempted shot from Ahmed Musa, who runs past the last defender after Mascherano loses ball possession in a dangerous area.

79: CHANCE! Argentina almost kill the game off, after a power header from Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay just trickles wide of Enyeama's goal, as the Lille goalkeeper stands rooted to the spot.

80: Nigeria SUB -
Peter Odemwingie OFF
Uche Nwofor ON

82: GOAL UPDATE - Bosnia 2 Iran 1. Reza Ghoochannejhad has halved the deficit, but is it too late for the Iranians now? 8 minutes plus stoppages for them to get back into the match..

83: GOAL UPDATE - Bosnia 3 Iran 1. Okay, it's virtually game over now. Avdija Vrsajevic with the goal, which has killed off Iran's hopes of qualifying for the knock-out rounds.

85: 5 minutes plus stoppages for Nigeria to grab another equaliser, can they do it?

86: Just a few minutes remain, as Nigeria keep up the pressure on Argentina's goal.
Meanwhile the Argentinians are preparing for a substitution.

88: Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia is walking towards the touchline, getting ready to come on for the final few minutes of the match. Waiting for the ball to go out of play for the sub to take place.

89: An ambitious long-range effort from Mascherano is comfortably smothered by Enyeama.

90: The fourth official has signalled for 4 minutes of stoppage time.
Argentina SUB -
Gonzalo Higuain OFF
Lucas Biglia ON

90+1: Imagine if Argentina went on to win the World Cup, in Brazil's home country. Wow.

90+2: Currently, they are set for a Last 16 tie with either Ecuador or Switzerland, based on the results in Group E tonight.

90+3: Just 60 seconds remain. Bosnia 3, Iran 1 - FT.

90+4: The referee blows his whistle to end the match. And there it is!

Argentina and Nigeria have both now qualified for the Last 16, after an interesting 5-goal thriller in Porto Alegre today.

And after a solid display from both sides, Barcelona striker Lionel Messi steals the show again with two goals and a superb performance from the magician-like man. Celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, what a birthday present that is.

21:19 - GOAL! The first goal of the night and it's from the penalty spot, as Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado breaks the deadlock for Colombia after striker Jackson Martinez was brought down inside the box by defender Yasuyuki Konno.

Yellow card for the Japanese man, and Cuadrado makes no mistake to open the scoring.

Clumsy and reckless: Porto striker Jackson Martinez was fouled inside the area by Konno
Opener: Cuadrado broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 18th minute
21:25 - Second substitution of the match for Greece, only 25 minutes into the match.

First, midfielder Panagiotis Kone was replaced after 8 minutes, due to a pulled hamstring. Then, goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis went down clutching his back, and despite treatment from the physios, he was replaced after 5 minutes of testing out whether he would be okay to continue.

Risk: Karnezis went down to ground, clutching his back - and then he tried to continue
21:42 - GOAL! Greece have taken a shock lead, thanks to striker Andreas Samaris!

Poor defending by Ivory Coast, who lose the ball in a dangerous area and are consequently punished by Samaris who beats his man and slots the ball past goalkeeper Barry!

How about that for a shock? Samaris celebrates his opener, to give Greece the lead

Samaras celebrates sending Greece through to the knock-out rounds along with Colombia

Brazil WC 2014 - Costa Rica vs England and Italy vs Uruguay, DUAL LIVE COMMENTARY:

Hello again everyone and welcome to my latest blog post - where I have a dual live commentary from the remaining group stage fixtures in Group D, as Costa Rica play against England and Italy take on Uruguay.

Here is the current situation in Group D:

  • England are already officially out of the World Cup and are therefore playing for pride today
  • Costa Rica have already qualified for the knock-out stages after back-to-back wins over Uruguay and Italy
  • Italy and Uruguay are both on three points, having both beaten England
  • Whoever wins out of the Italy vs Uruguay match will join Costa Rica in the knock-out stages, but currently before kick-off the advantage is with the Italians, based on their positive goal difference
Here are the team line-ups and news ahead of both matches in Group D today:

Costa Rica vs England -

Costa Rica: Navas, Gamboa, Duarte, Gonzalez, Miller, Diaz, Ruiz, Borges, Tejeda, Brenes and Campbell.

Subs: Pemberton, Acosta, Umana, Bolanos, Myrie, Barrantes, Francis, Granados, Calvo, Urena, Cubero and Cambronero.

England: Foster, Jones, Smalling, Cahill, Shaw, Lampard, Wilshere, Milner, Barkley, Lallana and Sturridge.

Subs: Hart, Forster, Johnson, Gerrard, Jagielka, Rooney, Welbeck, Henderson, Lambert, Sterling, Baines and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Italy vs Uruguay -

Italy: Buffon, Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli, De Sciglio, Marchisio, Pirlo, Verratti, Darmian, Immobile and Balotelli.

Subs: Sirigu, Perin, Motta, Candreva, Abate, Cassano, Cerci, Aquilani, Parolo, Paletta, Insigne and De Rossi.

Uruguay: Muslera, Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Alvaro Pereira, Gonzalez, Rios, Rodriguez, Lodeiro, Cavani and Suarez.

Subs: Munoz, Fucile, Gargano, Hernandez, Forlan, Stuani, Perez, Maxi Pereira, Ramirez, Coates, Lugano and Silva.

17:00 - So here is what I am going to be doing to ensure that I cover both Group D matches today.

I will take it in turns to commentate over both games, starting with Costa Rica vs England for the first-half and changing over to Italy vs Uruguay for the second-half.

17:01 - Both matches have already started, and I will have goal updates from both games when they occur.

17:15 - Like I said at the start of the post, England are playing for pride today, having lost both of their last two World Cup matches against Italy and Uruguay. Mathematically they are unable to qualify, and are therefore going home after this match.

16: Not much to report in the Costa Rica vs England match; manager Roy Hodgson is giving some of the younger players some experience and Lampard captains the side in what will probably be his last international cap for England.

17: Barkley, Shaw and Joel Campbell have all looked bright in the early stages of the match - and despite a half-chance for Sturridge on the edge of the area, it has been quiet so far in Belo Horizonte.

18: Still 0-0 in the Italy vs Uruguay match also.

22: Great save by Foster to react quickly and dive high towards the crossbar and deny Costa Rica from breaking the deadlock from a deadly free-kick, which swerved over the wall and looked goal-bound by Borges.

23: Costa Rica keep the pressure on their opponents as two corners are awarded in quick succession.

24: Foster rushes off his line and catches the ball comfortably into his grasp, as England can get out of their half and look to go on the attack again.

25: Good through ball over the top of the Costa Rican defence by today's England captain and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard falls into the path of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere who was inches away from having a shot on, but the danger is cleared away.

27: Half-hearted penalty appeal is waved play on by the referee as good dribbling from Everton young midfielder Ross Barkley to evade three challenges before the ball was switched into the path of Milner.

Milner crosses the ball into the box, Costa Rica fail to clear and the ball falls into the path of Sturridge who was adjudged to have been pushed down by the last defender from close range - England starting to have a few more chances now.

29: Some news in the other game between Italy and Uruguay, Milan striker Mario Balotelli has been given a yellow card for a dangerous high lunge when trying to win the ball in the air.

30: Consequently, Balotelli will not be able to play in the Last 16 of the World Cup, IF Italy qualify.

34: Another half-chance for England goes begging as a header at the far post is flicked on towards goal, but Sturridge's headed effort is over the bar.

36: As it stands, Italy and Costa Rica are through to the knock-out rounds. Costa Rica will play against Colombia or Ivory Coast in the Last 16, based on their results in their remaining game, both being played later tonight at 9pm (BST).

40: There has been some questions asked as to whether manager Roy Hodgson should be sacked after this early tournament exit, but I think that it is unfair.

The England team has potential to do well, but the team line-ups were not exactly the best and there was too much of a defpendence on certain individuals to perform and they struggled as a result.

41: Good inter-play between Wilshere and Barkley in the Costa Rica area results in the latter having an effort towards goal on the edge of the area - just wide from the Everton youngster.

42: Still 0-0 in Italy vs Uruguay, which will please both Costa Rica and Italy. You would expect the Italians to go on and win the match though.

45: The referee blows his whistle to signal the end of the first-half, after a half-chance from Costa Rica is blocked and falls into the hands of Foster.

17:45 -
HALF-TIME:

Costa Rica 0 England 0
Italy 0 Uruguay 0

Both Group D matches are currently goal-less at half-time, and it is the same situation in terms of the table as it was before the start of the match.

A draw is sufficient for the Italians, who have played better in their respective match while a weakened Costa Rica side are being held to a 0-0 scoreline against a second string look England team, who are already out.

Costa Rica are resting their key players for the knock-out round matches, and England still look vulnerable at the back on the counter attack but have not been able to take their chances, which has arguably been the story of the tournament for the Three Lions.

18:01 - The second-halves of the group stage matches are poised to start, and I will switch over to Italy vs Uruguay.

45: Both sides are making one substitution after the break -
Italy: Mario Balotelli OFF, Marco Parolo ON
Uruguay: Nicolas Lodeiro OFF, Maxi Pereira ON

46: Parolo replaces Balotelli, who was given a booking early on in the first-half and will miss the Last 16 match, if they get there ofcourse.

47: Yellow card given to Uruguay midfielder Arevalo Rios after a late challenge, arguably harsh decision from the referee.

48: Will be interesting to see how newly-announced Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile plays in this second period.

The Italian forward was the top scorer in the Serie A this past campaign with Torino.

49: Good defending on the far side by Darmian to deal with the danger as Suarez is lurking next to him.

50: Uruguay get forward and Pereira crosses the ball into the box, headed partially clear but headed back into the area.

Cavani is brought down by Bonucci in a tussle for the ball, and the PSG striker goes down easily - shouting for a penalty but the referee waves away his protests.

51: Uruguay free-kick from 35 yards out is wasted by Suarez, instead of crossing the ball into the area he goes for goal but his shot is well wide over the bar and out for a goal-kick.

52: PSG young defensive-midfielder Marco Verratti is limping near the centre circle clutching his groin, he has picked up a knock.

53: Italy doing their best to frustrate Cavani, who looks flustered after being denied a penalty.

54: Immobile tries to have a shot on goal, blocked and cleared away by the Uruguay defence.

55: 10 minutes gone in the second-half, still 0-0 in the Costa Rica vs England match as well as this one. Who would have thought it?

56: There has to be some goals today, surely? Uruguay need to win, otherwise they are out of the World Cup and to be honest, they are not playing as if they know that.

57: Italian defence does look vulnerable under pressure, but the Uruguay players are not doing enough at the moment to warrant being ahead.

58: As seen in the Uruguay vs England match, they only need one chance to score though - which makes the game unpredictable to say what will happen.

59: CHANCE! A great opportunity to break the deadlock for Uruguay! Great inter-play near the edge of the area between Suarez and Rodriguez, before the latter has an outside-of-the-foot shot which trickles wide of Buffon's goal.

60: RED CARD! It's all kicking off now, as Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio is given a straight red card after a studs-up challenge on Arevalo near the centre-circle.

He protests his innocence, but the replays show that he did not win the ball and it could have injured Arevalo dangerously there.

61: The referee could have given Marchisio a yellow, he could have just called for a foul. Red card, and he probably gave it as he was so close to the tackle itself.

Marchisio is arguably unlucky to have been sent off for the challenge, and now Italy are down to ten men.

63: Uruguay SUB -
Alvaro Pereira OFF
Christian Stuani ON

65: Good save by Buffon, who does well to parry a close range effort from Suarez after some good passing and movement from Uruguay as Italy struggle to clear the ball away.

66: They have the man advantage after Marchisio's dismissal, can they go on and win the game now?

67: Good defending sliding tackle by Gimenez to deny Immobile from getting a shot away on the counter attack after a good pass forward by Parolo.

69: Italy looking dangerous on the counter attack, as Uruguay have one less defensive-minded player in the team and there are clear gaps in defence. An attacking substitution has meant that they are vulnerable at the back.

70: A tense 20 minutes to follow, as Italy are preparing to make another substitution.

71: Italy SUB -
Ciro Immobile OFF
Antonio Cassano ON

72: Immobile limps off the pitch grimacing as he is replaced by Cassano, clearly still feeling the effects from the sliding challenge by Gimenez a few minutes earlier. He has looked dangerous on the counter attack but he will feel that he could have scored today.

73: Still 0-0 in both matches being played today, as both sides are preparing subsitutions. Verratti has gone down after being accidentally whacked on the leg by Juventus defender Martin Caceres on the follow-through when trying to clear the ball.

74: Italy SUB -
Marco Verratti OFF
Thiago Motta ON

75: Verratti has been instrumental in midfield today, but is unfortunately replaced by the more experienced Thiago Motta after suffering another knock in the last few minutes.

Hopefully he is okay, as he is taken off as a precautionary measure with a stretcher from the Italian physio.

76: Uruguay are pushing men forward now as they go in search of the opening goal, crossing the ball into the box and Italy are desperately trying to scramble the ball clear.

77: If only Italy had scored earlier, they would not be under so much pressure. De Sciglio is booked for upholding the run of Pereira on the flank to stop him from winning the ball.

78: Uruguay SUB -
Christian Rodriguez OFF
Gaston Ramirez ON

79: CONTROVERSY! Wow. Suarez in trouble again, this time as Uruguay get forward into the area, he appears to have bitten Chiellini's shoulder as he was being upheld.

Stupidity: Suarez is at it again - involved in an incident with Chiellini, biting the Juve defender
Luckily for him, the referee did not see it but he would have been sent off there, watch out for the news after this game I tell you.

80: Chiellini has reacted angrily to the challenge, and as Suarez is clutching his teeth, the Juventus defender is jogging towards the referee and showing his arm - as if there is a bite mark on his shoulder.

81: GOAL! Uruguay are in-front! Diego Godin with a header from close range!

Italy fail to take their chances and now they are trailing, with less than 10 minutes plus stoppages to play! Poor marking in the area, and Atletico Madrid defender Godin takes advantage to head past Buffon into the bottom corner of the net.

83: 1-0 to Uruguay, as it stands they have the victory to take them into the Last 16.

Meanwhile, there seems to be an argument down on the touchline between a member of the Italian staff and the officials, he has been sent to the stands and it's been a dramatic last 20 minutes to watch.

84: Italy have a free-kick from 25 yards out, hit low and hard by Pirlo goal-wards, but his effort is deflected by the wall and the resulting corner is cleared away.

85: Uruguay counter attack with not many Italian players back behind the ball, but De Sciglio does well with a sliding tackle to halt the oncoming run of Suarez on the flank.

86: And now the cameras and the spotlight are firmly on Uruguay supporters in the ground, who are understandably overjoyed at their team's performance against 10-men Italy.

87: It's not over just yet though, Italy leaving it late to realise that they need to score.

88: Suarez goes on the counter attack with Cavani waiting in space, but he delays his pass and Italy defenders track back in-time to stop the attack.

90: The fourth official on the touchline has signalled for 5 minutes of stoppage time to be played, as goalkeeper Muslera is booked for time-wasting.

90+1: Italy keep up the pressure, as Pirlo and De Sciglio get on the ball on the edge of the area. Nice inter-play, but a low cross into the box is cleared away.

90+3: Motta passes across to Pirlo, trying to set up some patient build-up play but Uruguay are eager to clear the ball away as they panic-clear.

90+4: Barzagli evades the challenge of Cavani to get forward, before Gonzalez concedes a free-kick. Suarez has an ambitious effort wide as the clock ticks down, Buffon sprints as fast as he can to get the ball and they have one last chance.

90+5: Buffon gallops up the pitch in a last-gasp attempt to help his team to equalise, but Uruguay clear the danger.

The referee eventually blows the whistle, and it's full-time.

FULL-TIME:
Italy 0 Uruguay 1 -
The South Americans leave it late to qualify for the Last 16 thanks to a headed effort from Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, as Italy were poor for the majority of the game and acted as if they were content to play for a draw, which is always risky.

Meanwhile in the other Group D match, Costa Rica drew 0-0 with England in what could have been named as an international friendly given the completely different situations for both teams.

England and Italy are joining the likes of Spain, Australia and Cameroon by exiting the tournament in the group stages - while Uruguay and Costa Rica will play in the knock-out rounds, which start this Saturday.

Stay tuned for more World Cup action!

Brazil WC 2014 - Cameroon vs Brazil, LIVE COMMENTARY:

Hello again everyone, and welcome to my latest blog post - where I have a LIVE Commentary from the last group stage match in Group A, as Cameroon look to pull off a massive upset as they play against the group leaders and host nation Brazil, despite the confirmation that they are OUT of the World Cup so therefore playing for pride.

Brazil have been under some pressure and criticism from the media in recent days, after their poor 0-0 draw with Mexico last week they were expected to have dominated the group with ease and there are some questions over whether they have enough quality and tactics to masterclass through the knock-out rounds and win the World Cup this year.

Here are the team line-ups for tonight's match -

Cameroon: Itandje, Nyom, Matip, N'Koulou, Bedimo, Enoh, Moukandjo, M'Bia, N'Guemo, Choupo-Moting and Aboubakar.

Subs: Feudjou, N'Djock, Assou-Ekotto, Djeugoue, Nounkeu, Eto'o, Makoun, Chedjou, Webo, Olinga and Salli.

Brazil: Cesar, Alves, Thiago Silva, Luiz, Marcelo, Paulinho, Luiz Gustavo, Hulk, Oscar, Neymar and Fred.

Subs: Jefferson, Victor, Fernandinho, Dante, Maxwell, Henrique, Ramires, Hernandes, Willian, Bernard, Maicon and Jo.

21:30 -
30 minutes gone, and it hasn't exactly gone to plan for Brazil.
A fast start to the match from the hosts prompted a neat piece of skill by Barcelona striker Neymar to weave past his markers on the edge of the area before striking the ball first-time into the bottom corner of the net, to take advantage of Cameroon's defensive frailties which have caused a lot of trouble for the African side during this year's World Cup.

FACT: Neymar's goal was his 3rd at this year's World Cup, and also the 100th goal in Brazil's 100th World Cup match.

Neymar took advantage of the space and gaps in Cameroon's defence to break the deadlock
Then, the unexpected happened. Cameroon took one chance and made the Brazilians pay. A header inside the area from close range thanks to Schalke defender Joel Matip has given Cameroon their first goal at the World Cup, and has made it 1-1. 30 minutes played, and the Brazil supporters sit and wait.

Unexpected: Cameroon team-mates celebrate Matip's equaliser from close range to make it 1-1
34: GOAL! Brazil back in-front! And Cameroon's defensive in-capabilities are shown again, as Neymar scores his second goal of the night to ensure that Brazil re-take the lead before half-time.

35: That's the young Barcelona forward's 35th goal in 52 appearances for his country; he is now Brazil's 6th leading goal-scorer of all-time.

36: Poor defending again from Cameroon and they are exposed and consequently punished. It's surely obvious to know that you cannot give players time and space on the ball, especially with quality players such as some of those on display today?

38: Still 0-0 in the other match in Group A; between Croatia and Mexico.

40: Currently as it stands, here is how the table looks -
1st place: Brazil with 7 points
2nd place: Mexico with 5 points
3rd place: Croatia with 4 points
4th place: Cameroon with 0 points

42: Well-timed sliding tackle by PSG defender Thiago Silva near the touchline, as Brazil push players back and Cameroon get forward.

43: Yellow card was given to Cameroon midfielder Eyong Enoh in the 11th minute after a late tackle on left-back Marcelo.

45: Just the minute of stoppage time to be added on at the end of the first-half.

45+1: The referee blows his whistle to end the first-half, as Brazil lead by 2 goals to 1.

21:55 - Neymar leads the Golden Boot race with 4 goals in 3 matches so far after his first-half brace against Cameroon tonight.

21:58 - It's obvious that Cameroon cannot still qualify for the knock-out stages regardless of whether they win today but they have to be playing better than they are now with an improved second-half performance.

22:03 - The second-half begins, with a lone substitution from Brazil.

Brazil SUB:
Paulinho OFF
Fernandinho ON

45: Brazil go on the counter attack straight away, but a comical error by Hulk on the flank after doing well to beat his marker means that the ball spins out of play for a goal-kick.

46: CHANCE! Almost 3-1, as Hulk shapes to shoot but delays his strike and is brought down cleanly by left-back Bedimo - before Fred does well to take a shot off and forces a good save from Itandje.

49: GOAL! It has been coming, and Brazil are now 2 goals in-front.

Continued pressure has paid off less than 5 minutes after the start of the second-half, thanks to a goalmouth scramble falling into the path of striker Fred who taps into an empty net after an inviting cross deceives goalkeeper Itandje at the near post and there is no defenders back to clear the danger away.

50: 3-1, and Brazil are in full control now (if they were not already). That's Fred's 18th goal for Brazil.

52: And the replays have shown that Fred's headed tap-in was in-fact offside, but it was too hard to call from the linesman on the far side and if you can't give it, then you should not guess.

53: Brazil lucky, but they have deserved their lead.

56: Half-chance for the Brazilians, a long ball over the top of the Cameroon defence by Neymar finds Hulk on the edge of the area, but the Zenit winger delays his movement and Matip intercepts the attempt and the ball goes out of play for a goal-kick.

58: Cameroon SUB -
Benjamin Moukandjo OFF
Edgar Salli ON

60: Match stats so far are as follows -

Cameroon have had 9 shots, compared to 14 from Brazil.
All of Brazil's shots have been on target, and only 5 on target for the Africans.
And not surprisingly, it is Brazil who are on-top in terms of possession. 59% for the "samba stars."

62: Brazil SUB -
Hulk OFF
Ramires ON

63: Another substitution for Brazil, with Ramires replacing Hulk for the last 30 minutes or so. Hulk has played okay, but could have arguably scored and made a few assists, if only he did not hesitate when he was on the ball..

66: Some whistles and boos in the crowd, as the pace of the game has slowed down significantly - Brazil are happy to just take this 3-1 lead as a win, Cameroon look down and out.

70: Neymar is brought down near the edge of the area as Cameroon clear the danger after Brazil's counter attack breaks down - but the Barca forward stays down clutching his knee and the ball is put out of play out of respect so that the physio can come on.

71: Neymar is treated by the physio, who apply spray to his injured knee and ankle as he picked up a knock while trying to get past a defender and collided with their trailing leg.

72: Brazil SUB -
Neymar OFF
Willian ON

73: Neymar is consequently replaced by former Chelsea manager Scolari, he does not want his man to be badly injured so does not risk it, with the game already virtually over as a contest.

74: GOAL UPDATE -
Mexico 1 Croatia 0
A header from captain and defender Rafael Marquez has given the Mexicans the lead, they are joint top on 7 points.

76: GOAL UPDATE -
Mexico 2 Croatia 0
Another goal for the South American side, this time from winger Andres Guardado.

80: Second booking of the match goes to Stephane M'Bia, after a late challenge on Luiz Gustavo.

81: Cameroon SUB -
Maxim Choupo-Moting OFF
Jean Makoun ON

83: An interesting finish in store now, as Mexico are now 3-0! Thanks to a goal from Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, Brazil are only top of the group on goal-difference currently.

84: GOAL! Great inter-play of passing and quick movement by Brazil on the counter attack, and they make Cameroon pay again after some sloppy defensive play.

Manchester City defensive-midfielder and substitute Fernandinho with the eventual strike, lurking past the last defender to poke past Itandje into the net.

88: Another goal in the Mexico vs Croatia match, but it's for Croatia, thanks to a consolation strike by Perisic. 3-1, and Brazil will play against Chile next in the Last 16.

90: The fourth official has signalled for 4 minutes of stoppage time, as Croatia are down to ten men for the dying moments courtesy of a high boot by Rebic.

90+2: Brazil have not been at their best, but it was obvious before the match that this would not be a fair contest against a team that have simply struggled to defend. The only exception would be Joel Matip.

90+3: Goal-kick from Julio Cesar, and it will be the last kick of the game. Cameroon are already out of the competition, and Brazil have not been forced to hit top gear but have shown flashes of individual brilliance to do the job set for them.

90+4:
FULL-TIME:

Cameroon 1 Brazil 4
A rout for the Brazilians, despite playing against a far weaker team than you would want to see them up against.

Comfortable, but not convincing: Brazil won tonight, but are they good enough to go all the way?
Onwards and upwards to the knock-out rounds, which will be more of an interesting challenge for the host nation - who have arguably had a bumpy ride along in a group they were previously expected to dominate.

So here are the confirmed teams qualified and eliminated from the competition -

QUALIFIED: Brazil, Mexico, Holland, Chile, Belgium, Argentina, Costa Rica and Colombia.

ELIMINATED: Spain, England, Bosnia, Australia, Croatia and Cameroon.
